Urban Foraging 101 is a fun, unique, info-packed class led by FirstWays.com blogger Becky Lerner that teaches you to identify an amazing array of common wild edible and medicinal plants and trees of the city, and then harvest them with the utmost respect for nature. We cover safety, lookalikes, medicinal and edible preparation of plants, historic and ethnobotanical uses.
Our class begins with a walking tour in an urban neighborhood; later we sit down as a group to meditate in a park and tap into our intuitive connection with plants to explore an ancient way to learn about plants, using a mystery tincture. We also smoke legal wild herbs as a group (participation in smoking is optional).
Bring:
We'll be on our feet walking around for most of this three-hour workshop, so please wear comfortable shoes, bring water, and dress to be outdoors in rain or shine conditions (if it's hot, you may want sunglasses and sunscreen). For the last hour or so, we will be sitting on the ground, so wear clothes you don't mind sitting on the grass in. And since we'll be talking about a long list of plants, you may want to bring a camera and/or pen and paper for note-taking and memory-making. Water bottles are welcome.
Along the way, we will discuss safety guidelines and resources for further study. (Note: Class ends at Alberta Park, NE 21st and Killingsworth St., which is three blocks north and one block of west of our start location).
